The Summerland Community Centre is proud to present the Cherry Groove Ensemble on December 1, at 7:00 p.m.
In the spring of 2023, a talented group of local musicians came together to play the music they love, and the Cherry Groove Ensemble was born. The group plays in all styles from Latin to Swing, from Standards to Modern. The musicians have worked to develop the clean, sweet sounds of the 1960’s “West Coast Cool Jazz” styles of Paul Desmond, Scott Hamilton and others. Members of the group are Charlene Cole, David Scott, and Jim Redding.
Charlene started playing piano at age 6. In 1992 she completed her Associate of Music in piano as well as a Bachelor of Church Music degree. She has taught piano for over 30 years and been involved as a vocalist, accompanist, and worship leader. Her interest in jazz began in 2016 and she is really enjoying sharpening her skills with the experienced musicians in the Cherry Groove Ensemble.
David has been playing drums since age 14 and gigging in combos and big bands regularly for 40 years playing all music genres, but with a love for Jazz and Swing. David also plays weekly with a soft rock group in the valley at a local jam.
Jim started his musical adventure in the school band in 1970, playing in both Jazz and Classical ensembles as well as solo work with a variety of styles. He has a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Victoria. His 35 years of teaching in the public school system has brought music into the lives of many young musicians.
