SUMMARY:Yanti and the SoCo Blues Crew
DESCRIPTION:Coming to the Summerland Community Centre at 7PM on Friday\, June 20\, are the blues-infused sounds of Yanti and the SoCo Blues Crew\, a group of five local super-talents! \nOur community is already acquainted with Yanti’s great pipes. She has developed a long resume of singing with high profile local groups\, like the Justin Glibbery Quintet (JGQ)\, and the Crawford Crossley group\, as well as leading her own “Song Catching” sessions with the public. Yanti captivates audiences with her compelling musical delivery and vibrant stage presence. \nInstrumentalists of the Blues Crew include guitarist Robert Johnson\, bassist Frank Artés\, and drummer Rod Rose. Over the years\, Johnson and Artés have individually been part of numerous music projects covering a variety of genres from blues to funk\, and jazz to big band. They’ve also at times played in the legendary Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne band. Rose’s drumming style has always added a whimsical element that adds humour\, and we’d run out of room listing who he has played with locally! \nIncluded in this already talented grouping now is keys player Mel Zachary\, who concert-goers have heard play at the Centre previously with Don Wade and Sax Among Friends (with Yanti). Wade dubbed Zachary as “Elevenfingers” for his ability to seamlessly breeze over the keyboards. \nAll these capable musicians love playing many styles of music\, including Latin\, jazz and fusion.  As you can see from the above mix-and-match\, musicians love to group and re-group to play and offer a different sound and a different energy.  Blues lovers will love this talented combo! \nNote that tickets were in demand weeks before they were even printed\, so be sure to get yours as soon as possible! \nJoin the Blues Crew and find yourself a seat at friendly cafe style tables with a lovely ambience. Also on offer will be snacks\, wine and beer for purchase\, and a 50/50 draw. Tickets are $20 (or $15 for SCCA members) and are available for sale locally at Artisans of the Okanagan starting May 9.  Or you can reserve tickets for pick up on concert night by stating the show date and number of tickets wanted\, and e-transfering to summerlandcommunitycentre@gmail.com.  Please purchase or reserve tickets by June 19.

SUMMARY:Big Band Extravaganza!
DESCRIPTION:Summerland and surrounding areas\, you are in for a treat: the BIG BAND EXTRAVAGANZA is coming to Summerland again this year on Saturday\, June 14 at the Memorial Park band shell! In June of last year\, the Extravaganza attracted hundreds of people who gave wonderfully positive feedback. \nEach band has pretty much the standard big band configuration of 5 saxophones\, 4 trombones\, 4 trumpets\, and a rhythm section. Oh yes\, and singers! Here’s the line-up\, allowing a 15-minute changeover time in between performances: \n12:00 – South Okanagan Big Band (Summerland) \n01:15 – Okanagan Valley Big Band (Vernon) \n02:30 – Lake Country Big Band (Lake Country) \n03:45 – Thursday Night Jazz Band (Penticton) \nThe music and sound of Big Bands seems to be making a comeback. In recent years\, swing dance groups have been attending big band events\, and many of these groups comprise young or middle-age adults. They have added fantastic energy to the performances. Let’s hope they come and don’t mind dancing on the grass! \nIt would cost over $7\,000 to pay all the musicians in a big band for four hours at union rates. Yet these musicians are not only willingly paying their own way over to play for you for the love of it\, they are also on a mission to help raise funds for the Summerland Community Centre. So\, the proverbial “hat” will be passed around to collect donations. Come support their efforts\, and enjoy! Bring your lawn chairs and some refreshments and take in some great music. \nIn case the weather does not cooperate\, the event will take place indoors at the Summerland Community Centre with seating for about 100 people\, for admission by donation. (Sorry\, the kitchen and bar cannot be open at that time.)

SUMMARY:SOUTH OKANAGAN BIG BAND - Spring into Jazz!
DESCRIPTION:Our long-favourite house band returns to entertain its constantly growing fan base!  The South Okanagan Big Band (SOBB) rehearses regularly at the Summerland Community Centre and has become a community favourite. Each concert the band has put on has been enthusiastically received. Recent shows have all sold out! \nThe Big Band configuration – 5 saxes\, 4 trombones\, 4 trumpets and a rhythm section – has its roots in 1940’s jazz.  These “big bands” backed the likes of Doris Day\, Frank Sinatra\, and Tony Bennett singing the old jazz standards.  At the last SOBB concert\, the unusual addition of 1940’s style “The Andrews Sisters” singers received enthusiastic response … so they just may make a return appearance! \nThe big bands of the day also performed instrumentals and featured talented soloists. But besides the old standards\, the South Okanagan Big Band endeavours to include music in other genres\, including some rockier tunes as well.  New band leader\, the talented Neil Bateman\, now waves the baton to conduct the band. He has introduced the band to some of his own fabulous arrangements of music\, too. \nWe applaud that the SOBB members happily contribute their time and talents to this evening\, and all proceeds go to the benefit of the Community Centre. Wrap your heart in that! \nDon’t miss this entertaining show! Your ears will delight with full and rich sounds for a couple of hours the evening of Friday\, May 2 (7PM). You’ll find a cafe-style ambience\, beer and wine for sale\, and you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a 50/50 draw. \nTickets are $20 ($15 for members) and are available in person at Artisans of the Okanagan in Summerland. You can also reserve tickets via e-transfer to summerlandcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Please include the date of the show and specify the number of tickets you wish to reserve. \nAnd don’t forget your dancing shoes. Just in case jiggling in your seat and foot tapping doesn’t quite cut it for you!

SUMMARY:A MAN NAMED SUE
DESCRIPTION:The Summerland Community Centre is excited to continue showcasing unique musical talents in our Valley through our monthly fundraising concerts. Coming up on Friday\, March 21\, at 7PM with inspiration from the music of the legendary Johnny Cash will be A Man Named Sue\, who will perform “The Songs of Johnny Cash and Other Outlaws.” \nA Man Named Sue graduated from Summerland Senior Secondary\, quipping that he tended to be “a bit of a career high school student.”  He began his musical journey in the early 90’s\, playing professionally with Top 40 bands\, a couple of punk rock bands\, and a Kiss tribute\, to name few.  But he fell into being a Johnny Cash fan in his 20’s.  \nHe first performed as A Man Named Sue at the Rutland May Day celebration in 2009.  Since then\, he has been very active performing his favourite collection of songs.  Sue has played all over the Pacific Northwest\, Alberta\, and even Puerto Vallarta at various festivals and in night clubs\, at times sharing the stage with other diverse and unique acts. \nIt’s the timeless and widespread appeal of the songs of Johnny Cash that draws audiences to A Man Named Sue.  Cash was one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His music embraced country\, rock and roll\, rockabilly\, blues\, folk\, and gospel. This crossover appeal and versatility earned him the rare honour of being inducted into three separate Halls of Fame: for Country Music\, Rock and Roll\, and Gospel Music! \nFrom Dive Bars to Community Celebrations\, and from Retirement Homes to Private Parties\, A Man Named Sue plays perennial Cash favourites\, as well as a couple that may be new to your ears.  Sue is a one-man-band with a full sound. His act is about 70% Cash\, and is rounded out with Willie\, Waylon\, Merle tunes – plus a little rock and roll at the end – all delivered with high energy\, a splash of cheeky humor\, steel string guitar and a booming voice. Expect to hear some “hard\, dirty\, Outlaw Country music” with belly laughs and never a dull moment! \n C’mon down\, y’all hear?!  Git yer tickets at Artisans of the Okanagan for $20 Cash (!) or $15 for SCCA members starting one month prior to the show.  Or reserve tickets any time by e-transfer to summerlandcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Rush seating will be available at cafe-style tables of eight. There will be a cash bar for wine and beer and a 50/50 draw.  \n(Sorry\, no refunds.)

SUMMARY:CRAWFORD CROSSLEY QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Crawford Crossley Quartet to jazz it up at the Centre \nComing to the Summerland Community Centre and already creating excitement are the rich and dynamic jazz sounds of the Crawford Crossley Quartet. The Quartet has played at many well-known venues in the Valley and beyond. Further\, all four musicians – Larry Crawford\, Allan Crossley\, Stefan Bienz\, and Yanti – have performed at the SCC before with each other\, and with other musicians as well. \nYanti has developed a long resume of singing with high profile local groups\, like the Justin Glibbery Quintet (JGQ). She has captivated audiences with her compelling musical delivery and vibrant stage presence as she delivers either soft ballads\, or upbeat tunes with lightning-fast lyrics. \nAn accomplished bassist\, Stefan Bienz has accompanied many high-profile Okanagan entertainers\, such as the JGQ and jazz-oriented Anna Jacyszyn. But he loves diversity and also plays with Layer Cake Mountain\, a group that explores a “rural roots” sound. In addition\, Stefan has been called upon by many traveling and international groups (such as Ben Waters from the UK) when they have needed a “local hire” bassist. \nOur well-loved Summerland musical legend\, Larry Crawford\, plays saxophones\, flutes\, and clarinet. He spent 25 years as a featured soloist in armed forces bands and has extensive radio\, television and studio experience. Larry has been a primary woodwind player in orchestras with some of the old greats\, like Harry Belafonte and Liberace. He has composed and arranged hundreds of tunes\, a selection of which will be featured in this evening’s entertainment. \nAllan Crossley\, piano player\, arranger and leader\, spent his career as a music educator\, leading an award-winning high school jazz program. Retired now\, he has the time to build on and enhance his own music. Besides being a skilled keyboardist\, Al is also a gifted poet and writer\, actively collaborating with Larry to bring words to his music. \nMuch of the show will be original tunes\, some of which are “world premieres” and will be performed this evening for the first time anywhere. Being a week after Valentine’s Day\, you can expect to hear many tunes with regard to relationships. \nJoin us Friday\, February 21 at 7PM for a high calibre and memorable evening at the Summerland Community Centre! \nTickets are $20 cash ($15 for SCC members)\, available at Artisans of the Okanagan\, or by e-transferring to summerlandcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Seating will be cafe-style\, and there will be a cash bar for wine and beer and a 50/50 draw.
