SUMMARY:Summerland Community Centre's 50th Birthday Party!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 50 Years of Community\nThe Summerland Community Centre began in the 1960s when Harry and Ida Dracas helped local seniors create a place to gather\, socialize\, and enjoy activities. With just a $200 grant\, the group launched a drop‑in program at the I.O.O.F. Hall\, offering dances\, carpet bowling\, shuffleboard\, and Bingo. As membership grew\, the need for a permanent home became clear. \nIn 1975\, Summerland Council offered land\, and with a provincial grant and energetic fundraising\, volunteers built the Seniors Drop‑In Centre themselves. It officially opened on August 5\, 1976\, and within a year the mortgage was paid off — a remarkable achievement that still reflects the heart and dedication of those early volunteers. \nFast‑forward to 2018\, when the Centre was re‑imagined and opened to the wider community. Today\, it thrives as a welcoming\, family‑friendly hub for all ages. \nNow… let’s celebrate!\nThis year marks our 50th Anniversary\, and we’re throwing a full week of festivities from September 18–26. The celebration wraps up on Saturday\, September 26\, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, with a joyful community party featuring special guests and local dignitaries\, a free BBQ lunch cooked by the Kiwanis Club\, birthday cake\, entertainment\, and more.  We’re still planning! \nOur Golden Anniversary! \nIt’s a milestone built on volunteer spirit\, community pride\, and five decades of connection — and we can’t wait to celebrate it together.

SUMMARY:A Man Named Sue - the music of Johnny Cash and Other Outlaws
DESCRIPTION:Sure as the sun sets in the west\, rolling into the Centre on Friday\, October 16\, is A Man Named Sue\, performing “The Songs of Johnny Cash — and Other Outlaws.” \nA Man Named Sue (yes\, that’s the name he insists on) graduated from Summerland Senior Secondary — eventually. He cheerfully admits he was “a bit of a career high‑school student.” His musical wanderings began in the early ’90s\, playing with Top 40 bands\, a couple of punk outfits\, and even a KISS tribute band. Somewhere along the way\, he fell head‑over‑boots for the music of Johnny Cash. \nSue debuted his outlaw persona at the Rutland May Day celebration in 2009\, and he’s been on the road ever since — performing across the Pacific Northwest\, Alberta\, and even in Puerto Vallarta. He’s shared stages with all sorts of colourful characters\, proving he can hold his own in just about any saloon\, festival\, or nightclub. \nA one‑man band with a full\, booming sound\, Sue proudly claims his show is “about 70% Cash\,” including some of Cash’s lesser‑known gems. The rest of the set rides the range with Willie\, Waylon\, Merle\, and a little rock and roll to close things out. Expect high energy\, cheeky humour\, a steel‑string guitar\, and a voice that could rattle the rafters. In his own words: “hard\, dirty\, Outlaw Country music.” \nLast time Sue played the Centre\, the room was pleasantly packed — and due to the previous audience’s requests\, this time he’s bringing even more Johnny tunes. So y’all best c’mon down\, hear? \nTickets are available at Artisans of the Okanagan for $20 “Cash” (we couldn’t resist) or $15 for SCCA members before noon on Wednesday\, October 14. Otherwise\, it’ll be a full‑on hold‑up at $25 at the door. \nThere’ll be a bar open for wine and beer for — you guessed it — cash.

SUMMARY:James Hay Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:James Hay’s blues journey began on the road in the mid‑90s touring with travelling bands such as the Ole Johnson Blues Band\, Northwest Boogie\, and Zydeco North. Those early years helped to shape his sound — a mix of gritty blues\, rootsy groove\, and the kind of stage presence that only comes from playing night after night in front of a live audience. \nWith his growing reputation\, James became a sought‑after sideman\, sharing the stage with well‑known Canadian blues artists including Jack de Keyzer\, Sherman Doucette\, and Poppa Dawg. Working alongside musicians of that calibre sharpened his craft and deepened his love for the blues tradition. \nWhether he’s performing solo or with one of his bands\, James delivers a show rooted in authenticity\, musicianship\, and a lifelong passion for the blues. \nWhat to expect from the James Hay Blues Band?  Well\, just a hard-driving\, swampy\, delta slide-blues-jump-jive-swing and boogie sound!  James Hay rocks on guitar and vocals.  “Boogie Man” Blue Rooney is at the bottom end on bass.  PJ “Like the Pyjamas” Hermann drives the rhythm on drums. \nThe group plays a blend of original blues tunes as well as selections of vintage and modern blues favourites.  They cover tunes by Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, B.B. King\, Eric Clapton\, Buddy Guy\, Robert Johnson\, T‑Bone Walker\, Albert King\, Freddie King\, Taj Mahal\, John Mayer – and many more. \nGet a taste of this band here:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cV5Urqkf1R5EALpqwPJW4VvHtEsfK1AX/view?usp=drive_link \nAnd here:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fvNmCjwHMU82sK0PB5P2syYhVFxjZXJ1/view?usp=drive_link \nA NOTE FROM THE CENTRE:  Physical tickets will be available at Artisans of the Okanagan one month before the show.
